I wrote my first wordpress plugin, nothing fancy it allows embedding of youtube videos in a post using simple tages. There are many lke this out there but I wanted to go through the process and I wanted to be able to understand exactly how the plugin worked as some I’d used were sketchy on instructions in English.

  • Hiatus

For many months now I have been having great difficulty with my wordpress install, ever since it updated to 2.8 in fact. I have spent an age trying to solve the problem, which results in the inability to access the control, and my solution has eventually turned out o tb e quite drastic: I have switched to a Linux Hosting platform. My original decision to use a windows hosting solution was based around an intention to learn .NET whcih I was potentially going to be using at work a lot but subsequently the need never fully emerged. I had totally forgotten about this and discovered that if I switched my hosting platform to Linux with the same hosting provider I got a much better package as well as my wordpress installation being rock solid.

The only other problem I came across, though it was in an unpublished test page was ne of [...]

  • Configure SMTP

After having a nightmare trying to work out how to get my WordPress installation to send email I have come across the rather wonderful Configure SMTP plug-in by Scott Reilly. I can get php to send emails in pages I write on the server, and I can get them to be sent from any address, even email addresses that aren’t from my hosting domain. I can also add a script to the wordpress index.php page that sends an email each time the file isloaded and that works fine. For some reason I can’t get WordPress to be able to send them though. The hosting company said that ini_set(‘sendmail,’server’) needs to be called before the mail function will send an email but as far a I can see WordPress scripts include that call as well. This problem seems to be [...]
